In an age where musicality is rarely found, the San Fernando Valley-made group Phat Yaki stands out with its intricate instrumentation and creative sonic experiments. Blending influences from Stevie Wonder, Steely Dan, The Doobie Brothers, and Michael Franks, their nostalgic yet unique catalogue of music fuses jazz, funk, and soulful tones for an uplifting soundscape rooted in harmonious chords. Founded by Lazer, Ethan, and Jon during their time at Champs Charter High School of the Arts, Josh joined the trio after being suggested by their music director. Officially named by their instructor and accomplished musician Jeffery Byrd (Lionel Richie, Jill Scott, The Clark Sisters), the name ‘Phat Yaki’ pays tribute to their captivating melodies and a traditional food dish of their ancestors.
